First lady Michelle Obama received a few gardening tips from students Wednesday as she toured a Northern Virginia elementary school's vegetable garden. Mrs. Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack visited Hollin Meadows Elementary in Alexandria to promote the Obama administration's HealthierUS Schools initiative. Students showed the first lady how they harvested lettuce from the school's extensive garden that will be used in the salad at a special Thanksgiving luncheon later this week.

The latest foodie app to hit Facebook is a kid-friendly produce personality quiz that seeks to discover whether you think like an eggplant or a beet. There's no intellectual heavy lifting here, just a lighthearted series of questions probing favorite sports and preferred zoo creatures. Still, we were astounded by the program's acumen when it proclaimed us to be "daring, bold, venturesome" tomatoes — why yes, yes we are.

It's Sunday night and I've just come off an 11-hour flight rumpled and cross-eyed after reading the last installment of Steig Larsson's "Millennium" trilogy straight through. When my friend picks me up at the airport, she reminds me that I'd asked her to make a reservation at Eva for their prix fixe Sunday dinner. What foresight!
